RACE TACTICS
Scratch Race:
In this type of race everyone starts together and the idea is to use your strengths to cross the line first.
There are lots of variables such as terrain and conditions but with a bit of planning you can make the most of your strengths.
Lets say you are someone who has a fast finish.
The 20km circuit course has a few undulations approximately 5 km from the start/finish but nothing too steep or long.
The race distance is 80km with a level finish on a wide road.
Perfect.
First thing is to make sure you can ride the distance and have something left in the tank at the end.
Next thing is, if you have a chance go over the course and check out the undulations. How close together are they ? How close to the finish ?
Look at the finish. Is it exposed to the prevalent wind ?
It is helpful if you know who your opposition is and what their strengths and weaknessess are.
Lets assume that amongst your opposition, are at least 2 very good climbers you also have 3 or 4 very strong allrounders and then you will always have a couple of sprinters who will be there at the finish.
First things first.
Make sure you can go the distance.
As a sprinter you need to be there at the end in the front group and fresh enough to unleash your sprint.
You can safely assume that the climbers will attack over the bumps, the strong riders will attack on the flat and the other sprinters will be waiting for the finish.
Now you have done your homework let’s see how the race unfolds.
Next week the race :
