Coaching 1

IF YOU DO WHAT YOU’VE ALWAYS DONE

YOU’LL GET WHAT YOU’VE ALWAYS GOT. This saying came into my head today when I was reading an article on Arthur Lydiard in the Sunday Star Times. Arthur Lydiard was an innovative coach who didn’t accept that things should stay the same and was always looking for that edge.

It’s amazing how many riders do the same thing year after year and achieve the same results year after year. That’s fine if that’s all you want but for many it’s not enough. A good coach will not only help you set goals and plan your training but will always be looking for ways to give you that edge. In my role as club coach I would like to do two things. Firstly I would like to recruit more coaches to help our young riders and secondly I will try to provide you with the means to set up your own training programme.

If you are interested in coaching but feel you don’t have the knowledge then don’t worry because most of us felt the same at the beginning. You don’t need to be a sports scientist, just be willing to listen and learn and to give a little of your time. Over the next few months I will show you how to set up your own training programme using current training practices and theories.
